About Steven Sater

Known for his creative reinterpretations of classic stories, Steven Sater gained international acclaim for Broadway sensation Spring Awakening. Sater’s rock-infused score and modern lyrics gave a wide appeal to the musical retelling of German playwright Frank Wedekind's 19th century drama. In 2007, Spring Awakening garnered Steven Sater a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical and a Drama Desk Award for Best Lyrics. Steven Sater also received a Tony for Best Original Score and a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album, and received a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical in London.

Steven Sater first collaborated with Duncan Sheik during the production of his play Umbrage, with Sheik writing the music to Sater’s lyrics. The two would go on to create a number of projects together, including Nero and The Nightingale, a musical adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen tale. Nero premiered at the Magic Theatre in San Francisco and The Nightingale is soon to debut at the American Conservatory Theater, there.

Steven Sater was born in Evansville, Indiana. While attending Washington University as an undergraduate, Sater was almost killed when he jumped from his balcony during a building fire. He became committed to pursuing his artistic passion while recovering from his injuries. Soon after his near-death experience, Steven Sater went on to Princeton University to study English literature.

Currently, Steven Sater is working on another modern reimagining of a classic story, collaborating with System of a Down lead singer Serj Tankian to create a hard rock musical version of the Greek tragedy Prometheus Bound. He is also developing a new musical with recording legend Burt Bacharach and a film for Sony Pictures.

Steven Sater currently resides in Los Angeles.
